1 Captain America Mad Libs
Los Angeles Price/Stern/Sloan Publishers 1981 0-843-10702-2 / 9780843107029 Stiff Card Wraps Very Good Octavo -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall
One of a series of 1980s party game booklets for kids and comics fans, in which one player would select one of twelve stories (with a number of blank spaces in the sentences) from the booklet, and then request nouns, adjectives, verbs, and so on from the other players. The first player would then read out the story, with the suggested words in the appropriate spaces, and in the process hope to form an amusing (or, as the directions would have it, a "fantastic, screamingly funny, shocking, silly, crazy or just plain dumb") story. Story titles include "The Red Skull," "Captain America Protects a Movie Star," "Captain America Rebuilds His Car," "Captain America at the Singles Party," "The Avengers Find Captain America," and so on. Unpaginated, illustrated w/black & white drawings of Cap and other Marvel creations. Only light general wear, sticker pull to top right corner of back cover, original price sticker to back cover. None of the blanks have been filled in and there are no previous owner's marks of any kind. A scarce item, and especially difficult to find in unused condition.

73 Girion, Barbara Joshua, The Czar, and the Chicken Bone Wish (signed)
New York Charles Scribner's Sons/Scribner 1978 0-684-15929-5 / 9780684159294 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Octavo -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall Richard Cuffari Inscribed & Signed by Author
A fourth-grade klutz with a few troubles meets an old man who claims to be a czar who lost control of all Russia on the snap of a single wishbone, and subsequently befriends the kid in an effort to help him develop a bit of self-confidence. In a lovely piece of coincidence, this copy is inscribed by the author to an actual Joshua ("For Joshua--/who has/quite a while to go/before he enjoys this/story. Lots of good/luck chicken-bone wishing/to your parents to help/you on the way!/Barbara Girion/Maplewood, New Jersey/May 1980"). Additionally, this copy contains a four-page, laid-in biography of the author. Virtually all the hardcover copies one sees of this title are formerly the property of cruel hands meting out the usual library desecrations, but this one, fortunately, has escaped the hands of such barbarians, and thus does not have the snot hammered out of it. Tangerine boards w/cream cloth backstrip, 155 pages. Light general wear, in price-clipped dust jacket w/moderate wear to corners/spine ends, light edgewear, mild soil to rear panel. An uncommon title when signed.

Douglas & McIntyre / Groundwood Books 094867 1988 0-88899-076-6 / 9780888990761 First Edition Paperback Very Good Sextodecimo -- from 5.75" to 6.75" Inscribed & Signed by Author
Marketed as fiction for young adults. A young woman living on an island where her grandfather runs a lighthouse has just graduated from high school, but doesn't want to go to the city to become a teacher, nor does she particularly want to help run the lighthouse. Instead, she wants to become an artist, but there may not be any hope for that, until she meets an older, attractive, accomplished man, whereupon "she can't help wondering whether he holds the answer to her problem." This copy inscribed by McNeil, on title page. Inscription reads, "--For Dorothy/& Dick/love/Florence./1989." So if you're a Dorothy or a Dick, this is the copy for you. Of course, if you're a Dorothy you'll have to hook up with a Dick, and if you're a Dick you'll have to find yourself a Dorothy, but hey, how tough can that be? 127 pages, cover illustration by Florence Straub. Moderate general wear.

An unread copy. (A word about our grading: Fine -- or, sometimes, As New -- is our highest grade, and it's down from there. There is simply no grade better than Fine or As New. "Mint" is a word referring to a delightful flavour or an imposing edifice where coins are produced. It may be acceptable where baseball cards or comic books or coins and the like are concerned, but it has no place in the terminology and protocols of the book world. Never has. No place whatsoever. None. Zero.)

Racine Whitman Publishing Company #605 1940 First Edition Wraps Very Good Quarto -- from 9.75" to 12" tall
A colouring/painting book featuring characters from the cartoonist's ageless comic strip. Unpaginated (140+). Extremely scarce in this condition, with no pages coloured, marked or used in any way, and no previous owner's scribblings -- to find this title uncoloured is remarkable. A 1.5" tear to top edge of front cover, two .25" tears (one each to fore-edge and bottom edge), thin creases to corner tips, tear to top edge of first ten or so pages (tear begins at .75" at title page, and decreases in length through successive pages), 3/8" tear to fore-edge of title page, tip of bottom left corner of back cover chipped off (about .25" either way), foxing to back cover, "Blondie 1940" written in neat block letters on spine, foxed pages, moderate general wear.
