Assignment Budapest, Aarons, Edward S.
1 Aarons, Edward S. Assignment Budapest
London & New York White Lion Publishers 1974 0 85617 198 0 / 9780856171987 1st UK edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Small Octavo -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall
A scarce hardcover edition of a title first published in paperback in the USofA, featuring tough-guy operator Sam Durell, "a troubleshooter for an agency so secret that even the government didn't know about it." In this one, a Communist hatchet-man with the Hungarian secret police has slipped into America to assassinate an unknown victim, a victim which may even be Durell. Red cloth w/gilt spine lettering, 160 pages. Some slant, bump to bottom edge of front cover, another to top edge of back cover, tanning, in dust jacket w/light wear to corners/spine ends, light edgewear.

New York Broadway Books/Random House 2001 0 7679 0657 8 / 9780767906579 First Edition Hard Cover As New Near Fine Octavo -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall
1st printing w/complete number sequence. Author's first mystery. When a D.C. lawyer discovers a web of corruption and scandal that includes millions of dollars missing from a company account, her boss/lover is suddenly found murdered. This one has an interesting history, having been recalled by the publisher less than two weeks before its publication date, and with reviewers and book stores who had received copies being instructed to return them at once. It is rumoured that the book is a roman a clef, with the lead character based on an Alderson acquaintance, and easily identified. Ace book reporter Dennis Loy Johnson, puzzled as to why a publisher would recall a work of fiction, especially a hardcover with the costs involved in its production, asked the Broadway Books publicist (who sent him a letter requesting that he return his copy) about it (she said, "No comment."), then tracked down the author and asked him about it (he said, "No comment."), and finally called the head of corporate affairs at Random House (Broadway's parent company) to ask *him* about it (he said, "No comment."). So there you have it: Broadway Books invested a fair chunk of change in the production of this title, but was willing to throw it all away and apparently consign to pulp all the copies they could get their hands on, this copy not being one of them. Black boards w/black cloth backstrip w/silver spine lettering, 277 pages. Lightly worn dust jacket, which is now in a protective mylar sleeve. A nice copy, unread.

After "pristine water -- hidden for millions of years, untouched by pollution, and possessing natural healing powers -- is found miles under Antarctic ice," this thriller's hero soon comes to believe that the water "might hold the key to a microscopic Jurassic Park." In between, though, we have outbreaks of mad cow disease in France, our hero's suspicion that there's more to the outbreaks than meets the eye, and that there's a conspiracy stretching around the globe. This copy signed by Kalla, on title page. (It's not hard to see from the scribble that passes for his signature that Kalla is a doctor. It's a dreadful scrawl, for which he should be embarrassed. I mean, it's okay for doctors to scribble out indecipherable prescriptions to make pharmacists' lives miserable and put their patients' lives in jeopardy, but hey, this is a signature for book collectors that we're talking about, here, doc -- show some respect.) New York Phoenix Press 1948 First Edition Hard Cover Fair Fair Ex-Lending Library Small Octavo -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall
Gird your loins and lay in some concoction produced by the genius of modern chemistry, because you have before you a reading experience from a writer unlike any other in the world of the written word (unless you count the world of the written word in poetic form, as delivered by the incomparable William McGonagall, in which case we're talking a tie). The incomparable Keeler presents us with the unsolved murder of a "shabby ragpicker who was killed with a dagger inlaid with precious jewels, and then deposited, dagger and all, in the seedy hostelry known as the Hotel Romanorum," thirty years whereafter "an employee of Angus MacWhorter's Mammoth Motorized Shows found a clue to the slaying, and set out to solve a puzzle which had been given up as insoluble before he was born." Blue cloth w/black spine lettering, 256 pages. Wear to corners/spine ends, moderate cloth soil, five small letters ink-stamped to top edge, dusty edges, lending library stamp to front pastedown, another to first end paper, hinges split, mild dampstaining to top edge of first end paper, in price-clipped dust jacket w/light wear to top edges, handling wear/crinkling, lending library sticker to front panel, some dampstaining. The bottom inch of the jacket has been cut off (this is because there was a semi-protective sleeve on the jacket -- which I have discarded -- but it was an inch shorter than the jacket, so some idiot at the lending library presumably trimmed the jacket to fit -- no wonder I drink). An uncommon title in any condition, and moreso in a jacket, even one that's only seven-eighths there.

London Macmillan 1970 First Edition Hard Cover Fair Good Small Octavo -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall
Lovesey's first mystery, and winner of the Panther/Macmillan First Crime Novel Competition. Set in London of the late nineteenth century, murder is committed during a bizarre athletic/endurance competition. Sadly, the natural enemy of the book (no, not an insect or drooling adolescent or vermin, but worse, the librarian) has gotten at this one, thus the book is graded as Fr only, w/two tape stains to each of front and back covers, lighter tape stains to end papers/pastedowns, library stamp/discard stamp to copyright page, library stamp to rear pastedown, rear end paper excised, strong tanning, a bit of internal soil. Price-clipped dust jacket w/moderate edgewear, smudging to rear panel, considerable crinkling/handling wear, small piece of tape to reverse spine. Fortunately, the dust jacket was not library-laminated. Affixed to front panel is Panther/Macmillan sticker announcing the book as winner of the competition. Offered to fill that hole in your collection until you can afford the megabucks signed copy in pristine shape.

195 Shames, Laurence Virgin Heat (signed)
New York Hyperion 1997 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine Octavo -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall Signed & Dated by Author
Author's fifth novel. A woman is in love with a man running scams and dodging cops in Key West, despite the fact that he betrayed her Mafia kingpin father ten years earlier. This copy signed and dated by Shames (perhaps it would be more accurate to say that this copy is squiggled and dated by Shames, since actually deciphering these marks would take a Rosetta Stone and two wizened scholars--even so, it's better than that insult-to-fans signature of James Ellroy's, which more closely resembles a dull two-year-old's spastic markings than anything written by a competent adult). Dust jacket bears two stickers, one promoting the publisher's book giveaway (first-time Shames readers could get a copy of 'Sunburn,' an earlier title), the other a "Signed by the Author" sticker (a good thing they told us, too, since any three-year-old wielding a Bic could have done this one, which is why I haven't removed the thing). Dust jacket by Mike Wepplo. Unread.
