Monarch 134 1959 First Edition Paperback Good Sextodecimo -- from 5.75" to 6.75"
Paperback original. Rubbing, spine roll, chip to bottom right spine edge, a couple of gentle crosscracks, general wear.

16 Carr, John Dickson The Lost Gallows
Pocket 436
Originally published in hardcover in 1931 by Harper & Brothers. "It started when El Moulk's automobile roared crazily through a London fog, its driver dead as a herring. The car screeched to a stop in front of that creaky relic of ancient horrors, the Brimstone Club. Through its cavernous rooms and gaslit passages a murderer hunted victims for a private gallows. The calling cards of a notorious hangman, a miniature gibbet, a length of rope, and an inscription from the tomb of Egyptian kings warned El Moulk and his dazzling French mistress that death was on their trail. It was a perfect case for Bencolin, a detective who preferred fantastic murders." Impressions/thin scratches, imperfect binding left fore-edge of first 30+ pages extending slightly forward, small white-out application to top right corner of title page (presumably to obliterate ink price).

This one's got all the earmarks of great literature: a crumbling marriage that drives the protagonists to other people: the husband into the arms of another woman who has his child and loses it because of *her* peeping-tom husband's shenanigans, and the wife "into the depraved arms of another woman." (gotta be on constant guard against those depraved arms). Reading crease, rubbing, moderate general wear. Internally tight and clean.

24 Cook, Will We Burn Like Fire
Monarch 130 1959 First Edition Paperback Good to Very Good Sextodecimo -- from 5.75" to 6.75"
Paperback original. We could call this a racing novel featuring fast cars and a fast woman, but dammit, the guy who wrote the copy on the back cover deserves a bit of a nod for this effort: "To Wendel Garland sports-car racing was an intimate and personal thing--like making love to his sensation-starved secretary, Alice Lavery [ummm--if he's making love to her and she's *sensation-starved*, what does that tell us?]. Every time he got on the track Wendel risked his neck to win. He knew the car could be the instrument of his death, yet there was poetry in danger -- as there was poetry and danger in Alice's dedicated depravity." (Dedicated depravity! I *knew* there had to be more to the allure of racing than just the cars! Sign me up.). Handling wear, light edgewear, gentle crinkling/creasing, some scraping to bottom portion of right edge of back cover. Internally tight and clean.

36 Durrant, Theo The Big Fear (originally published as 'The Marble Forest')
Toronto Popular Library 507 1953 1st Popular Library edition Paperback About Good Sextodecimo -- from 5.75" to 6.75"
When a doctor receives a telephone call informing him that his four-year-old daughter has been buried alive, with only a six-hour air supply, he makes a mad dash to a local graveyard "with his pretty secretary by his side" (you just know the ugly one wouldn't have gone with him) and starts digging randomly (our good doctor isn't blessed with a lot of calm), only to find himself involved with a couple of murders. 192 pages. Spine roll/slant, crosscrack, rubbing/impressions, thick crease diagonally across top right corner of front cover, thin crease to bottom right corner of same, nicks to edges at spine ends, tanning. The book is intact, but won't stand anything but the most agonizingly careful handling, so if you intend to actually read it rather than add it to the collection you'd better be prepared for disaster. For the book, not you. I mean, I'm not going to track you down and beat you up or anything -- I just want you to know that if you don't intend to use this to fill a hole in your collection, reading this dooms it to disintegration.

131 Seale, Sara The Dark Stranger
Winnipeg Harlequin 870 1964 1st Harlequin edition Paperback Very Good Sextodecimo -- from 5.75" to 6.75"
When a gypsy fortune teller informs a young woman that a dark stranger will come into her life the young woman is disbelieving, since she has one of those evil stepmothers who keeps her "decidedly in the background." But this being a Harlequin and all, I figure it won't be long before the background becomes the foreground and romance blooms, especially after someone clubs the evil stepmother over the head, sets fire to her, then scatters her ashes to the winds screaming along the Cornish coast. Okay, maybe not that last part, but you gotta admit, it *would* be a nice departure from the usual 1960s Harlequin fare. 191 pages. Mild spine slant, light rubbing, creasing to bottom left corner of back cover, four small ink numerals to disclaimer on copyright page, light general wear.
