73 Gene Day's Black Zeppelin (5 issues)
Renegade Press Wraps Octavos -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall
#1 April 1985 through #5 October 1986; for a number of years Gene Day wanted to publish his own comic magazine, and in 1978 took a few steps in that direction, producing and collecting material; unfortunately, circumstances conspired against the magazine's release at that time, and it was shelved indefinitely; then, suddenly, in September of 1982, Gene was dead of a massive heart attack, and it looked as though the magazine had died with him; but through an odd set of circumstances, the dream eventually became a reality, and in April of 1985 the first issue of "Black Zeppelin" rolled off the presses, edited by Gene's widow, Gale, and his friend, Joe Erslavas; contributing stories and art to these issues are Gene, his brothers David and Dan, Charles Vess, Dave Sim, Larry Dickison, Bruce Conklin , A. Funnell, Mark Shainblum, Garbriel Morrissette, Dave McCarthy, Ronn Sutton, Gordon Derry, and Barry Blair; all issues VG-F or better;

Although one wonders if the apology/correction came because Reprise was just a good, honest corporate citizen -- yes, an oxymoron -- or if it came because Ian Anderson ripped Reprise a new anal orifice after reading the incorrect information. 1st printing w/complete number sequence. Author's first mystery. When a D.C. lawyer discovers a web of corruption and scandal that includes millions of dollars missing from a company account, her boss/lover is suddenly found murdered. This one has an interesting history, having been recalled by the publisher less than two weeks before its publication date, and with reviewers and book stores who had received copies being instructed to return them at once. It is rumoured that the book is a roman a clef, with the lead character based on an Alderson acquaintance, and easily identified. Ace book reporter Dennis Loy Johnson, puzzled as to why a publisher would recall a work of fiction, especially a hardcover with the costs involved in its production, asked the Broadway Books publicist (who sent him a letter requesting that he return his copy) about it (she said, "No comment."), then tracked down the author and asked him about it (he said, "No comment."), and finally called the head of corporate affairs at Random House (Broadway's parent company) to ask *him* about it (he said, "No comment."). So there you have it: Broadway Books invested a fair chunk of change in the production of this title, but was willing to throw it all away and apparently consign to pulp all the copies they could get their hands on, this copy not being one of them. Black boards w/black cloth backstrip w/silver spine lettering, 277 pages. Lightly worn dust jacket, which is now in a protective mylar sleeve. A nice copy, unread.

236 Andersen, U.S. The Smoldering Sea
New York A.A. Wyn 1953 First Edition Hard Cover About Very Good Very Good Octavo -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall
"The wartime adventures of an American liberty ship, her rough and tough crew of merchant seamen, her 'ninety-day-wonder'--and her captain, Ransel, the strange and somber ex-naval officer." In their 'Sea Fiction Guide' Smith and Weller designate this title as one aimed at junior-senior high school readers, but with the dust jacket copy reading, "Here is a powerful story, a new novel of the sea, and of men -- hard, realistic, not for the squeamish, but alive with moments of virile humor. Lovemaking and drinking and carousing ashore in Noumea and Brisbane are as much a part of the story as the brilliantly recounted combat scenes," I'm not entirely sure that the junior-senior classification is accurate, especially for a title from the 1950s (although I have no doubt that 1950s junior-senior readers in Noumea and Brisbane were entirely capable of "lovemaking and drinking and carousing." Quie possibly Smith and Weller actually read the thing, though; the guys who who write dust jacket copy -- not so sure.) Some slant, wear to corners/spine ends, dusty/tanned edges. Price-clipped dj w/moderate edgewear/flaking, light chipping/short tears to spine ends/corners, small chip from bottom edge of rear panel, light smudging.

Tallahassee The Naiad Press 1996 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Octavo -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall
Edited and introduced by Mathilda Hills, who tracked down the rumour of a book of lesbian love written by the editor of The Little Review. Text in Estonian. B.G. (Bengt Gottfried) Forselius was a 17th-century Estonian educator who introduced a number of educational innovations, among them the creation of a spelling system that simplified both the teaching and learning of Estonian. An uncommon title, and if you can read Estonian, you can be the envy of everyone on your block. Navy leatherette w/gold lettering to front cover/spine, 116 pages. This copy inscribed on reverse of first end paper (my Estonian is a bit rusty, and I'm not terribly familiar with the process Forselius created to facilitate learning the language, so please forgive me if I don't provide an accurate translation -- or even a wildly inaccurate one). Light general wear.
