1 van der Spuy, H.I.J. (Mani), and D.A.F. Shamley (editors) THE PSYCHOLOGY OF APARTHEID: A Psychosocial Perspective on South Africa (inscribed & signed)
Washington University Press of America 1978 First Edition Stiff Card Wraps Very Good Inscribed/signed by van der Spuy on copyright page
"Contains a collection of psychological essays and studies which analyses the South African situation from a psychosocial perspective. They deal with the psychology of the racial policies in South Africa and the national personality and psychopathology of White South Africa, with special emphasis on the Afrikaner." The contents break down as follows: "three essays on the Psychology of Apartheid followed by the reports of nine empirical studies, the findings of which form the basis of the interpretation expounded in the essays. It is concluded by an essay on child development and the future of South Africa." In addition to the editors, contributors include Gerald Singer, Zafra Barkusky, Elisha Davar, David Edwards, Graham A. Tyson, Sam Lison, George R. Frampton, F.J. Quesnell, Richard M. Oxtoby, Elsa Meyer, and C. Raphaely. Editor van der Spuy has warmly inscribed this copy to the woman who typed the manuscript, and who is elsewhere expressly thanked for her hundreds of hours of labour. The inscription reads: "Nov. 9th, 1978./To Lorna,/With my sincerest appreciation for/your sterling effort to make this book/possible./Mani." Ironically, the typist misspelled "Mani" as "Manie" beneath van der Spuy's tribute to contributor Gerald Singer, who died before the book's publication. A scarce item, more especially so signed. 116 pages (including Author Index, Subject Index). Mild slant, moderate edgewear, discolouration (presumed sunning) to cover edges, small tape stain to top of inside front cover. Internally tight. Scarce.
