"I have not hesitated to employ the medium of biography where that seemed the best vehicle for conveying the idea of a great and daring people led by a few great and daring pilots, prophets of adventurings: hence, the sketches of the lives of the great frontiersmen, Boone, Crockett, and Carson,--all great and significant lives, whose story is useful in illustrative quality. As justification of what might be called presumption on the part of the writer in undertaking a work of this nature, he has only to plead a sincere interest in the West, which was his own native land; a love for that free American life now all too rapidly fading away; and a deep admiration for the accomplishments of that American civilization which never was and never will be any better than the man that made it. It has not been the intention herein to write a history of the American people, but a history of the American man." Hough pays homage to the American ax, the American rifle, the American boat, the American horse, American waterways, trails and landscape. If it's associated with the American west, Hough liked it. 446 pages (including general index), gilt-stamped on decorated grey cloth, illustrated. Soil spots to front cover, flaking to white arrowhead-style decorations, numerous dark brown soil spots to darkened spine, others to back cover, dusty/spotted edges, small dampstain to bottom of fore-edge/right of bottom edge and affecting bottom corners of some 230 pages (never comes close to reaching text or touching illustrations), a slight roughness and very faint blueness to small section of first end paper suggests an erased inscription to previous owner. Save for aforementioned dampstaining to page corners, internally clean, and despite noted flaws, a serviceable copy.
