"Revised at the Instance of the Author's Family." Hogg is considered by many to be second only to some guy named Robert Burns in the pantheon of Scottish poets/writers. In his Preface, Thomson states that this edition of Hogg's work "is, in some respects, a reproduction in a cheaper and more popular form, of the collection of his writings in poetry and prose, partly prepared by the Author himself, issued by the publishers in eleven volumes, foolscap 8vo. A new Life of the Shepherd has been supplied, in addition to the former Autobiography, and a fresh arrangement has been made of the larger Poems, while the smaller have been classed into distinct and appropriate groups. Hogg's own contributions to the 'Forest Minstrel', many of which were omitted in the earlier edition of his works, are now restored, so that the present issue will be, more than any other, full and complete." In minor revisions here and there the editor assures us that he "enjoyed the advantage of the co-operation of the Author's widow, and the surviving members of his family." Volume I, 'Tales & Sketches.' Quarter leather w/leather corners, patterned boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, raised bands, 712 pages, illustrated w/engravings from paintings. Scratches/rubbing to boards, rubbing/moderate wear to quarter-leather and corners, bottom edges scraped to boards, some scraping to cover fore-edges, moderately worn corners/spine ends wear to top edges, faint crack beginning to bottom right corner of front cover, faded gilt, moderately soiled/dusty edges, soiled end papers, some soiling throughout, moderate foxing. Volume II, 'Poems & Ballads.' Quarter leather w/leather corners, patterned boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, raised bands, 468 pages, illustrated w/engravings from paintings; Scratches/rubbing to boards, rubbing/moderate wear to quarter-leather and corners, bottom edges scraped to boards, some scraping to cover fore-edges, moderately worn corners/spine ends, wear to top edges, faded gilt, moderately soiled/dusty edges, soiled end papers, some soiling throughout, moderate foxing. All in all a serviceable set.
