A collection of seven stories, "Nude Croquet" (Fiedler), "The Country Husband" (Cheever), "The Third Partner" (Philipson), "With Men It's Different" (Newhouse), "Force of Circumstance" (Maugham), "Bitter Honeymoon" (Moravia) and "The Golden Land" (Faulkner). 155 pages + 3 pages of advertisements for other Berkley titles, cover illustration by Robert Maguire. Crease to top right corner of front cover, a bit of spine roll, 1/2" separation to bottom right spine, light surface wear, top corners of first two end papers torn off (does not affect any text), the usual browning. Internally still fairly tight and clean.

Contains the first English language appearance of Maugham's "Marriages Are Made In Heaven," as well as prose/poetry contributions and illustrations by a variety of writers and artists, including A.E. Housman, Thomas Hardy, G.K. Chesterton, John Masefield, Havelock Ellis, Charles S. Ricketts, Reginald Savage, T. Sturge Moore, Lucien Pissarro, Bernard Sleigh, E. Gordon Craig, Louise Glazier, Elinor Monsell, Paul Woodroffe, Sydney Lee and others. Pictorial paper over boards, linen spine, pictorial end papers, woodcut frontispiece byt Charles Hazelwood Shannon. Darkening to board edges, bumped/worn corners/spine ends, some moderate soil/darkening to end papers, cracked hinges w/front hinge partially separated. Text block cleran and tight. A relatively fragile item made seriously collectible by the presence of Maugham's signature. Scarce signed.
