Text in Estonian. B.G. (Bengt Gottfried) Forselius was a 17th-century Estonian educator who introduced a number of educational innovations, among them the creation of a spelling system that simplified both the teaching and learning of Estonian. An uncommon title, and if you can read Estonian, you can be the envy of everyone on your block. Navy leatherette w/gold lettering to front cover/spine, 116 pages. This copy inscribed on reverse of first end paper (my Estonian is a bit rusty, and I'm not terribly familiar with the process Forselius created to facilitate learning the language, so please forgive me if I don't provide an accurate translation -- or even a wildly inaccurate one). The Ashanti Campaign of 1900, Armitage, Captain C.H., and Lieutenant-Colonel A.F. Montanaro
19 Armitage, Captain C.H., and Lieutenant-Colonel A.F. Montanaro The Ashanti Campaign of 1900
London Sands & Co. 1901 First Edition Hard Cover Poor No Jacket (as issued) Octavo -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall
In 1900, Sir Frederick M. Hodgson, governor of the Gold Coast, demanded to sit on the Golden Stool, sacred to the Ashanti people of the Akan interior (present-day Ghana). He hadn't a clue how serious his demand would seem to the Ashanti, who immediately prepared for and waged war rather than let the honour of their sacred object be thus demeaned. This is the story of the consequences, by two of the participants. This copy comes with a two-page printed insert from Hodgson to The Right Honourable J. Chamberlain, M.P., reporting details of the death of Captain P.H.A. Leggett, assistant inspector of the Gold Coast Constabulary, during the hostilities, and asking that Chamberlain convey to Leggett's relatives his "profound sympathy and the sympathy of all the European officers who were associated with" Leggett. The insert was once affixed to the top left corners of the front end paper/half-title/frontispiece, but has since come loose. At the top of the half-title is the handwritten inscription, "Mrs. Leggett Ambleside Sidcup/June 1901." This is therefore presumed to be the copy presented to Mrs. Leggett. Red cloth w/gilt lettering to front cover/spine, 278 pages (including appendices, index), illustrated, plan of Kumasi and map illustrating the campaign affixed at rear. All illustrations present, although one is bound in at a different spot than indicated in the list of illustrations. Worn/frayed corners/spine ends, cover wear, gilt faded (severely so to spine), hinges split, front end paper detached, pencil marginalia throughout, shaken signatures, some internal soil/foxing, tape stains, general wear and tear.

Loyalists in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War (3 volumes), Clark, Murtie June
40 Clark, Murtie June Loyalists in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War (3 volumes)
Baltimore Genealogical Publishing Company 1981 First Editions Hard Covers Very Good No Jackets, as issued Ex-Lending Library Octavos -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall
Taken "almost entirely from military records located in the archives of the United States, Canada, and Great Britain," Clark presents in Volume I "Official Rolls of Loyalists Recruited from North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana," in Volume II the same for Loyalists recruited from "Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Those Recruited from Other Colonies for the British Legion, Guides and Pioneers, Loyal Foresters, and Queen's Rangers," and in Volume III the rolls of recruits from "the Middle Atlantic Colonies, with Lists of Refugees from Other Colonies," and much else. These books are from a private library, and were on permanent loan by the owner to a local library's historical collection (the owner subsequently had a change of heart, and withdrew them in favour of private sale). The only indications of their library residence are small stickers pasted to the front pastedowns in all three volumes, and neatly written cataloguing information on the copyright pages (see scan for sample of the latter). All three volumes in red cloth w/gilt lettering/design to front covers, gilt lettering/rule to spines. Volume I: 635 pages, including appendices, index. Light wear to corners/spine ends, light scuffing to cloth, minor smudging to edges. Volume II: 687 pages, including index. Moderate wear to corners/spine ends, lightly scuffed cloth, stained edges (looks like someone spilled a coffee or a Coke nearby -- nothing serious, but certainly noticeable). Volume III: 484 pages, including index. Moderate wear to corners/spine ends, scuffed cloth. An uncommon set of more than passing interest to genealogists and scholars of the period. Since these weigh more than the average book, additional postage will be required. If you'd like to know precisely how much more before you order (and why wouldn't you?), send me your mailing address, and I'll cypher up a total for you. (C/WH)

Tells the stories of four grand balls given between 1876 and 1898, detailing "the costumes, the nation-builders disguising entertainment as historical research, and the excitement of otherwise-forbidden sexual display." The number line on the copyright page ends in 2, but a quick call to the publisher confirms that this is the first (and only) edition of this work (for some unfathomable reason, Goose Lane number lines often begin with a 2 -- go figure). This copy inscribed and signed in a neat and legible hand by Cooper, on title page ("To the University of New Brunswick/Cynthia Cooper"). Uncommon signed. Charcoal cloth w/silver foil lettering to front cover/spine, 185 pages (including Notes, Bibliography, Index), illustrated. Moderate wear to corners/spine ends, in lightly scuffed dust jacket.

185 Wright, Jim SASKATCHEWAN, The History of a Province
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1955 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good to Very Good Octavo -- from 7.75" to 9.75" Tall A.W. Davey Signed by Author
Published in commemoration of Saskatchewan's Golden Jubilee. A Governor General Award-winning author provides "an authoritative and exciting history of a province from the earliest days to the booming present." This copy warmly inscribed (on half-title) by Wright to Dorothy McCurry, the former Dorothy Lampman Jenkins, who was Canada's figure-skating champion in 1922 and 1923, and who married Harry Orr McCurry (Assistant Director of the National Gallery of Canada from 1919 to 1939, and Director from 1939 to 1955). The family vacationed at Kingsmere, Quebec. Inscription reads: "July 9, (followed by the inked-out, apparently incorrect year, which is then rewritten) 1965/For Dorothy McCurry--/at Kingsmere--with/special reference to/the blacksmith shop on/page 101, and always/with good thoughts/Jim W./P.S. This book was/done on contract for/the 'Saskatchewan Jubilee/Committee'. Under the/circumstances it could have been worse?/J." On page 101, Wright has drawn a quick vertical line in the bottom third of the left margin to mark the passage he mentions. This copy contains the scarce Errata slip correcting seven errors in the text. Red cloth w/jubilee device in gilt/green/red to bottom right corner of front cover, gilt lettering bordered in green on spine, 292 pages (including Selected Bibliographical References, Index). Moderate general wear, in moderately rubbed dust jacket w/a bit of chipping, short edge tears, impressions, general wear. Additionally, someone (presumably Dorothy McCurry) has written in small letters at the bottom of the rear flap, "Page [in pencil] 56 [in ink], Page 115 74 [in ink], and 130 131 141 146" [in pencil]. Presumably these notations refer to pages on which Mrs. McCurry found items of particular interest.
