Text in Estonian. B.G. (Bengt Gottfried) Forselius was a 17th-century Estonian educator who introduced a number of educational innovations, among them the creation of a spelling system that simplified both the teaching and learning of Estonian. An uncommon title, and if you can read Estonian, you can be the envy of everyone on your block. Navy leatherette w/gold lettering to front cover/spine, 116 pages. This copy inscribed on reverse of first end paper (my Estonian is a bit rusty, and I'm not terribly familiar with the process Forselius created to facilitate learning the language, so please forgive me if I don't provide an accurate translation -- or even a wildly inaccurate one). (A word about our grading: Fine -- or, sometimes, As New -- is our highest grade, and it's down from there. "Mint" is a word referring to a delightful flavour or an imposing edifice where coins are produced. It may be acceptable where baseball cards or comic books or coins and the like are concerned, but it has no place in the terminology and protocols of the book world. No place whatsoever. None. Zero.)

After six years of research and writing, the authors give us a history of hockey that is "the story of human cultural interaction and geographic migration. It is a game that spread worldwide from its original home in ancient Mesopotamia, along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, moving over the centuries across much of the ancient and modern world. As human society developed, the game of hockey became closely associated with practices of religion. At one point, ancient hockey and religion merged. The result being that these two disparate elements of ancient society became part and parcel of one. Ancient hockey became a celebration of religion. Later it became the game of legends, a celebration of man and his gods." This copy inscribed and signed by George Fosty, on title page. Inscription reads "To Susanne./All the best/--George". Fosty has also signed his name in full at bottom of title page. Laid in is a handwritten letter dated 5/9/04 on Stryker-Indigo memorandum/letterhead from Fosty to the aforementioned Susanne, with a brief mention of her company's possible distribution of the book, and indicating that he will call her to discuss the matter further. 261 pages. A fourth-grade klutz with a few troubles meets an old man who claims to be a czar who lost control of all Russia on the snap of a single wishbone, and subsequently befriends the kid in an effort to help him develop a bit of self-confidence. In a lovely piece of coincidence, this copy is inscribed by the author to an actual Joshua ("For Joshua--/who has/quite a while to go/before he enjoys this/story. Lots of good/luck chicken-bone wishing/to your parents to help/you on the way!/Barbara Girion/Maplewood, New Jersey/May 1980"). Additionally, this copy contains a four-page, laid-in biography of the author. Virtually all the hardcover copies one sees of this title are formerly the property of cruel hands meting out the usual library desecrations, but this one, fortunately, has escaped the hands of such barbarians, and thus does not have the snot hammered out of it. Tangerine boards w/cream cloth backstrip, 155 pages. Light general wear, in price-clipped dust jacket w/moderate wear to corners/spine ends, light edgewear, mild soil to rear panel. 182 Hewetson, Alan The Complete Illustrated History of the Skywald Horror-Mood (signed by contributor)
Manchester Headpress/Critical Vision 2004 First Edition Stiff Card Wraps As New Quarto -- from 9¾" to 12" tall Signed by Contributor
"In the early 1970s a small New York publishing company produced the ghastliest horror stories in the history of illustrated horror. Lasting only a few years, these comics established themselves as something wholly unique thanks to the editorship of 'ARCHAIC AL' HEWETSON, whose dark and perverse in-house style became known as the HORROR-MOOD." Hewetson here lovingly chronicles the inside story behind the Horror-Mood and its contributors, among them them Ed Fedory, Maelo Cintron, Pablo Marcos, Gene Day, Jesus Duran, Ricardo Villamonte, Dennis Fujitake, Doug Moench, Augustine Funnell, and many others. Includes a wealth of biographical sketches and interviews with many of those involved, as well as essays from some of the Skywald gang, all of it topped off with 19 stories from the long-gone Horror-Mood magazines, Nightmare, Psycho and Scream. (During Skywald's brief heyday some guy named Stephen King was moved to comment that Skywald was "Vital -- constantly moving ahead, breaking new ground, using innovative stories.") Sadly, Al Hewetson did not live to see the book's publication, dying of a massive heart attack on January 6, 2004, the very day he finished his chilling-in-retrospect final piece of writing for the book. This copy signed by Horror-Mood contributor Funnell. 256 pages (including story & title index), lavishly illustrated, terrific wraparound cover by Pablo Marcos. This weighs more than the average book, so additional postage may be required.

sequel to "The Way of a Boy," covering the two years immediately after World War II, and seeing the author land in Canada where he must adapt "to a new language and country at the same time as he adjusts to adolesence."; the copyright date is listed (incorrectly) as 1977, but since this is a sequel to a book published in 1993, and the last time I checked no one on the planet had fallen into a wormhole, it seems a tad unlikely that 1977 is correct; this copy signed, by author, on title page; spruce cloth, 206 pgs. incl. Acknowledgements, illustrated; minor bump to top spine; dj w/similar small bump; a nice unread copy, internally tight and clean;

After "pristine water -- hidden for millions of years, untouched by pollution, and possessing natural healing powers -- is found miles under Antarctic ice," this thriller's hero soon comes to believe that the water "might hold the key to a microscopic Jurassic Park." In between, though, we have outbreaks of mad cow disease in France, our hero's suspicion that there's more to the outbreaks than meets the eye, and that there's a conspiracy stretching around the globe. This copy signed by Kalla, on title page. (It's not hard to see from the scribble that passes for his signature that Kalla is a doctor. It's a dreadful scrawl, for which he should be embarrassed. I mean, it's okay for doctors to scribble out indecipherable prescriptions to make pharmacists' lives miserable and put their patients' lives in jeopardy, but hey, this is a signature for book collectors that we're talking about, here, doc -- show some respect.) Black cloth w/gilt spine lettering, 335 pages. An unread copy w/light general wear.
