The story of "Passion between a man and two women, one of them his wife -- a love both despairing and triumphant." (aren't they all?) A mere 2,000 copies of the first edition were published in London in 1945, and Smart's own mother successfully lobbied government officials in Canada to ban the book in that country. She then went a bit further, herself: she bought all the copies she could find that had made their way into Canada, and had them burned. (But, as is almost always the case, the book burners lost. The book remains in print and available to anyone who wants to read it, which is as good a way as any (the best, actually) to tell the censors and book burners to piss off.) Cream cloth w/black cloth backstrip w/cream lettering, 128 pages, introduction by Brigid Brophy. Minor wear to spine ends, a turned corner, in rubbed dust jacket w/moderate wear to corners/spine ends, two very short edge tears (to to each top edge), a couple of faint scrapes to front panel a few thin scratches. All in all a pretty decent copy.
