Locke (1632-1704) was an English philosopher and political theorist whose works were instrumental in laying the foundations of both the Englightenment and the philosophy of liberalism (freedom, equality in the eyes of the law, and consent of governed people). He would later be a major influence on both Adam Smith and Karl Marx. Both volumes brown cloth w/Harper Brothers crest blind-stamped to both front and back covers, gilt spine lettering, gilt top edge, fore-edges untrimmed. Volume I: (xvi) including preface, contents, 488 pages; Volume II: (xii), 574 pages (including index). Both volumes bumped/moderately worn corners/spine ends, scuffed/lightly spotted cloth, previous owner's signature. Many unopened pages. All in all a fairly nice pair of books. These weigh more than average, so additional postage will most likely be required.
